Lionel Messi is not letting his age dictate when he will retire, revealing that he is unsure of his plans for the future when that time eventually arrives. Despite nearing 37 years old and having played for top clubs like Barcelona, Paris St Germain, and Inter Miami, Messi remains focused on his present performance rather than his age as a determining factor for calling it quits from the game.
In a recent interview with the Big Time podcast, Messi revealed that he has a keen self-awareness about his performance on the field. He mentioned that the moment he feels like he’s not contributing or enjoying the game, he will consider retiring. Being very critical of himself, Messi knows when he’s playing well or poorly. Age won’t be a factor in his decision to retire, as he will listen to his instincts and continue competing as long as he feels good and passionate about the game.
At 36 years old, Leo Messi is uncertain about what lies ahead for his soccer career but is excited about his current experiences in the MLS.
The 36-year-old player from Argentina has been out of action since March 13 because of a persistent hamstring injury.
Messi has accomplished all there is to achieve in soccer by clinching the 2022 World Cup victory. When questioned about his future plans, the eight-time Ballon D’Or champion admitted he hasn’t quite figured it out yet. “I haven’t given it much thought. Right now, my focus is on savoring each day, each moment, without dwelling on what lies ahead. I’m still unsure about my next steps,” Messi shared.
“I plan on continuing to play for a bit longer, as it brings me joy. When the time comes, I will figure out what makes me happy and pursue a new role,” Messi stated. Unfortunately, Messi had to sit out of Argentina’s recent friendlies against El Salvador and Costa Rica due to a hamstring injury. Additionally, he was unable to participate in Miami’s matches against D.C. United and New York Red Bulls. Messi’s last game was for The Herons in their 3-1 victory over Columbus Crew in the CONCACAF Champions Cup’s Round of 16.
